Francine Spencer CPlay, Hamish Pettengell Aigantighe Art Gallery, Cara Fitzgerald Aigantighe Art Gallery, Keely Kroening SC Musuem, Chris Fauth CPlay and Roselyn Fauth CPlay meet to discuss the story that can be told in the playground.
Timaru's Story so far is an exciting one, and we felt that incporporating our enironment, heritage, arts and culture into the playground design will help people connect and play. We met with representitives from the South Canterbury Musuem, Aigantighe Art Gallery and iwi to go over the concept and to devise a plan on how to evolve the story.
From this we came out with a few key points. Māori creation stories, how the Caroline Bay area is important for food gather and is now a Te Ahi Tarakihi Mataitai Reserve. How the geology has formed Timaru and created a natural harbour. How in the mid and late 1800s mooring sailing ships was challenging and with over 20 shipwrecks there was a need for a man made harbour. How the coastline has changed including a new sandy beach that has been building out over 100 years to form Caroline Bay.
This document will help inform and inspire the playground design, as well as help everyone in Timaru have a stronger sense of identity and access to our story.
